LEAH D. SETZEN
PARTNER
Leah Setzen is a seasoned litigator whose practical, empathetic approach to even the most difficult, emotionally-wrought cases is appreciated by the men and women she represents. Leah’s extensive trial experience over the course of her career, including more than one hundred jury and bench trials, enables her to provide both depth and the breadth of knowledge and advocacy to her clients.
It is Leah’s philosophy that a constant, open line of communication with her clients will enable them to act as a team to achieve the best possible outcome. No question is too small to Leah, and she uses her vast teaching background to explain even the most complex or intricate family law issues to her clients in a way that empowers them to remain active participants in their cases.
Leah has always been inspired by the written word and has been a life-long reader and writer, from her days as opinions editor and columnist at The Daily Illini, the student-run newspaper of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to her current role of presenting case updates to members of the DuPage County Bar Association. Her love of words both written and spoken have informed her current varied practice of family law, from trying even the most sensitive custody case to preparing and arguing appeals before the Second and Third District Appellate Courts. Leah also enjoys acting as a resource for nontraditional families, who find Leah to have a sensitive ear and a logical mind.
When she is not advocating in court or on paper, Leah can be found spending her precious free time with her family, including three children active in all the varied activities that Naperville has to offer. A life-long resident of Naperville, Leah also enjoys running, knitting and taking her Boston Terrier for long walks.
Leah gives back to the Naperville community by serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and NCTV17, Naperville’s own community television station, and to the legal community as a member of the editorial board of the DuPage County Bar Association Brief. Leah also serves as a presenter to local advocacy and support groups, mental health and financial professionals, bar associations, the National Business Institute and by volunteering in the classroom to inspire the next generation of legal minds. Additionally, Leah mentors new attorneys through her alma mater and through the DuPage County Bar Association.
A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for both her bachelor’s degree and her law degree, Leah obtained her undergraduate degree summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1997 and her law degree cum laude in 2000. Leah received the CALI Award for excellence in legal research and writing in law school, where she wrote for the law school alumni publication, Illinois Jurist, and for The Daily Illini as an opinion columnist.
Leah is a member of the DuPage and Will Counties Bar Associations, the Robert E. Jones chapter of the American Inns of Court and various alumni networking groups. Leah is a past member of the board of directors of the University of Illinois Law Alumni Association and former chairperson for the University of Illinois College of Law’s annual Student-Alumni Career Conference.
